Why should my child take private lessons?
If you or your child have the desire to get ahead or excel in instrumental music, private instruction will enable the student to do better. Students who take lessons will generally do better than their peers who do not, if they practice. Musical honors such as District Honor Band, All-State Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival as well as others are easier to obtain with individual help. Students who wish to make All-State Band must take private lessons. Private lessons help students stay interested in practicing at home. The private lesson teacher is able to map out a course of study that is pertinent to their level and keeps them working. It can make playing an instrument more fun if the student is doing well, and receives positive reinforcement from doing so.
How much do lessons cost?
Prices vary, but usually range from $10.00 per 1/2 hour to $25.00 per 1/2 hour weekly.
Does my student have to take lessons?
No. It is not a requirement. Many students in Fayette County do choose to. When you consider the number of students currently taking lessons, it is a significant number. Competition for chair placement is strong at the middle school level. If you are using a school rental instrument, lessons are expected to ensure your child is practicing and the instrument is being used at its full potential because the investment is in the lessons not the instrument itself.
Is it difficult to sign up?
Sometimes it is. The teachers are often full, and can't take on any new students. The best thing to do in that case is call on a regular basis, in order to keep your name in front of them. It is important that you find a reputable teacher.
